How to Keep Going When You Think You Can’t




Sometimes life wears us down. Some things you have control of, other times things just happen. Sometimes life keeps coming at you, wearing you down until you feel like a grain of sand on the beach. Eventually, you reach the point of thinking, ‘I just can’t keep going on.’ What do you do then? Here are some ideas to help you keep putting one foot in front of the other. Let’s talk about how to push through and change things.

When Things Seem at Their Worst They Turn Around

Do you remember the old saying, ‘Life is at its darkest just before the dawn?’ Sometimes things seem to keep piling on you. Eventually, something will happen to change things and things will improve. Think about other times when you’ve struggled. Recognize that you got through it, and life got better. You’ve been through rough patches before. You made it through and you’ll get through this, too.

Take Control of the Things You Can Control

Stop trying to control everything. Break down the problem into manageable pieces. Take a look at what you can control. What kind of changes can you put in place? Start implementing change from there.

Be Kind to Yourself

What things make you feel better about who you are? Commit to doing something daily that makes you feel good. Think about the things that bring joy to your life and do them. It will help you feel better about everything in your life and keep you putting one foot ahead of the other. It could be something as simple as relaxing with a cup of tea or taking a hot bath. Seek out other people that have successfully made it through problems. Listen to their advice.

Make Changes Where You Can

Take a look at things you want to change. Break down a problem and choose one or two parts of the problem to focus on. Start making changes there. You don’t need to take on the world.

Be Realistic and Honest With Yourself

Cut yourself some slack. Don’t expect yourself to be perfect all the time. Don’t listen to the criticism of others. You know yourself better than anyone else does.

Look at the Big Picture

Think about what is important to you and focus on those things. Stop looking at every small thing you’re not happy with. Step back and think about the big picture. Don’t be critical of everything in your life and expect it to be perfect.

Remember why you want to make changes. It could be you

  • Want your family’s future to be secure
  • Eat better and exercise more so you can enjoy your grandchildren
  • You want to experience new things or travel

 

Write down these long term goals that are most important to you. When you’re feeling the day to day things aren’t going well remind yourself of these goals.

Focus on Today

Decide what changes you’d like to work on and focus on today. You only need to do it for today. That’s all. And then tomorrow do it again. After 21 days it will become a part of your routine. It will become a part of your daily life and you’ll have stopped resisting the change.
