Everyone experiences times when we are not happy with where we are. We find ourselves thinking ‘How did I get here?’ or ‘This isn’t where I expected to be at this time in my life.’ You thought you were on track and loving life, and now find yourself bored with the routine of it all. What was a life you were living and loving seems to have vanished like sand flowing through your fingers. You feel trapped. What did you miss? What changed?
It’s common for men and women to experience feelings of ‘being stuck’ when they get into their 40’s and 50’s.
Frequently people that feel ‘stuck’ find that:
Think about when you were younger. What things made you excited? What things brought a sense of joy to your heart? What gave you that sense of purpose? Giving thought to those questions will help you find the key to find where to start making changes. How do you make a change in direction so you can find the zest for life that you once had?
Consider doing something different. Where did you find fun when you were younger? Revisit some of those activities to see if they still get you fired up and loving life. Take a physical fitness class, cooking, photography or dance class.
Find joy in giving to those you love and your community. Volunteer at a women’s shelter or help at your children’s school. Teach Sunday School at your church, or go on a mission trip. Deliver meals to the elderly or help at a food kitchen for the homeless.
Think about what is important to you. What do you want your life to say to others? Are you doing something daily that reinforces the values that you want to pass on to your family or others?
Try things you’ve never done before. It’s a great way to break your boredom. You may find things you don’t like, but might also be surprised by new things you never thought you’d enjoy doing.
